The punch adds a tab that works like a ratchet, goes in one way and doesn’t come out while still allowing the metal to move freely in the gable trim. Once it’s snapped in, then you can fasten it from the bottom. I know the snap lock punch was designed for vinyl siding, but I’ve found this to be useful over the years using the same concept.
