Tsunami waves arrived on the eastern coast of Japan following a powerful 8.8. magnitude earthquake off the eastern coast of Russia that also sparked fears of a tsunami in the U.S.

Tsunami alerts were issued for Alaska and Hawaii on Tuesday after a major, 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia, according to officials.

The National Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for parts of Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, and a watch for portions of the West Coast, including California, Oregon, Washington and
