This is the second time this season Williams has been demoted from closer. In May, Weaver was handed the position, but he wound up on the IL shortly thereafter and Williams returned to closing and went on a good run until a recent bad stretch in which he’s allowed six runs over seven innings in seven appearances since July 19.

Despite an imperfect early-game performance, the Yankees did enough to secure a 5-4 lead and hand the ball to closer Devin Williams in the bottom of the ninth inning. But Williams promptly allowed a game-tying home run to Texas Rangers pinch-hitter Joc Pederson, who entered with a .126 batting average.
