Forecasters say a disturbance in the Atlantic has a 40-percent chance of cyclone formation over the next week.

Hurricane Gil weakened into a tropical storm in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Saturday, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. It was not forecast to threaten land. The Miami-based U.S. National Hurricane Center said the storm’s maximum sustained winds dropped to 65 mph.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring two areas for potential tropical development over the next few days, including one 180 miles east of North Carolina’s coast.
