Mayor Michelle Wu has announced that an independent investigation will be launched into school transportation safety at Boston Public Schools after the death of 5-year-old Lens Joseph,​ who was hit by a school bus.

Boston Public Schools will require additional safety-related reports from its school bus contractor Transdev and the company is speeding up refresher training for its drivers, in the wake of a school bus crash in Hyde Park that killed a 5-year-old last month, Mayor Michelle Wu and Superintendent Mary Skipper announced early Friday morning.

An independent review will examine safety policies and performance under the Boston Public School's transportation contract with Transdev, which manages 750 school bus drivers in the city.
