The president recounted how the Club World Cup trophy ended up in the Oval Office during an interview at the tournament finals on Sunday.
The U.S. President was not warmly received at the FIFA Club World Cup final, amid political and sporting controversies ahead of next year’s World Cup.
After the match, which Trump called “a bit of an upset” in a post-game interview, Trump was asked if he could issue an executive order to rename soccer “football” in the United States. Despite the let-down match, Trump lit up when a reporter suggested penning a new executive order officially renaming soccer “football” in the US.
However, after the game was when Trump unveiled an even more bold idea heading into the World Cup next summer, which involves an executive order on the part of the president. Trump was caught suggesting that he wants to change the name of soccer to reflect the global sport, which is often called "football" nearly everywhere else globally.
They call it football, but I guess we call it soccer,’ Trump said in an interview with a sports streaming channel. 'But that change could be made very easily.'
