A funeral was held Thursday for NYPD Det. Didarul Islam, one of the victims killed in Monday's shooting at a Midtown office building.

Islam came to New York City from his native Bangladesh when he was 20 years old, with "the promise of a better life," NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.

Islam, 36, has been hailed since his death as a doting father, a generous neighbor and a shining example of the best of the NYPD. An immigrant from Bangladesh, he was a four-year veteran of the force, and a married father of two young boys. His wife is due with their third child next month. Islam will be laid to rest in New Jersey.
