The Trump administration alleged Thursday that Columbia University violated federal civil rights law by acting with “deliberate indifference” towards harassment of Jewish students on campus since October 2023.

In a statement late Wednesday, the State Department announced it was focusing on those who were studying in “critical fields” or who had ties to the Chinese Communist Party and was revising visa criteria to “enhance scrutiny” of all future applications from China, including Hong Kong.
The commencement, during which thousands of students and parents packed Harvard Yard, caps the end of a tumultuous academic year for Harvard amid unprecedented threats from the Trump administration.
