This swamp chestnut oak is one of three giant trees within 50 yards of each other in Huntley Meadows Park in the Alexandria area. The others are a pin oak and another swamp chestnut oak.
“The tree (species) selected for this space is Quercus bicolor, also known as the White Swamp Oak, the same species planted throughout the New York City 911 Memorial,” she said.
West York Borough Manager Shawn Mauck said the swamp oak tree grows about 10 feet per year, and the sapling will soon be shading a memorial that will also rise in the park in the coming weeks.
