Before anything gets to the governor’s desk, each House bill has to be considered by the Senate and vice versa. All of it has to be wrapped up by the time the session ends Feb. 22.

The Virginia Senate has approved a bill to legalize regulated sales of recreational marijuana, three years after the state legalized cannabis possession for adults.

A Democratic-controlled Senate panel on Monday swiftly blocked multiple Republican-backed measures aimed at tightening immigration enforcement in Virginia, dealing a blow to GOP efforts just one day before the General Assembly’s legislative midpoint.

Crossover Day is the date on the General Assembly calendar when the House of Delegates and the Senate of Virginia have to finish work on all the legislation their members introduced this session.

Tuesday was crossover in Virginia’s legislature, the last day the chambers can consider their own legislation. From Wednesday on, the House of Delegates can only consider Senate bills and vice versa.
