A "doomsday" vault storing food crop seeds from around the world in man-made caves on a remote Norwegian Arctic island will receive more than 14,000 new samples on Tuesday, a custodian of the facility said.

Safeguarding crop diversity in a time of climate change remains a priority for much of the world — even if that's not the case for Trump.

Sudan, a country bordering Egypt in northeast Africa has decided to send crop samples to the "doomsday" vault in a remote Norwegian island in the Arctic. These genetic samples are of food crops seeds.

The main objective of the Arctic Circle Seed Vault is to preserve genetic diversity in agriculture. In a world where climate change and natural disasters can wipe out entire crops, the vault serves as humanity's insurance policy for global food security. It holds duplicates (backups) of seed samples from crop collections around the world.

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway will receive 14,022 new seed samples on Tuesday. Built in 2008, the vault safeguards global food crops against threats like war and climate change.

The 19 species represented included 13 native to Africa and six others that have found a place in the economies and ecologies of the continent.
