Dodie and her late husband, former Southern Baptist minister Pastor John Osteen, founded Lakewood in 1959. The couple’s initial services involved speaking in tongues and faith healing. Together, they also hosted a weekly TV program, with audiences spread throughout 100 countries worldwide.

"Dodie" Osteen, a Baytown native, was the widow of Lakewood co-founder John Osteen. She handled prayer duties and funeral at the church, the Houston Chronicle reported in 2016. She credited her faith with healing her through major health scares, including a bout of liver cancer, and even hosted a drive-by healing service outside the church.
