Since taking office in 2019, Pritzker has signed numerous bills into law that impose new restrictions on the sale, ownership and possession of firearms. The most significant of those was a 2023 ban on assault-style weapons and large capacity magazines, known as the Protect Illinois Communities Act.

Illinois Governor Pritzker signed two bills Monday that he says will support law enforcement and strengthen common sense gun laws. The first bill requires firearm tracing for all cases where a gun is recovered at the scene of a crime or is associated with a crime.

The crime numbers are shaping up to be the story of the summer in the city. Through this past weekend, homicides are down 30% from the same time period last year in Chicago.
